A Note from Our Founder

It’s rare to absolutely love the work you do–I count myself blessed to be one of those people. Our work and ministry is not just packing and moving, it’s personal and caring. It is not ‘cookie cutter’. There is no ‘typical’ move, because each person and their life situation is different. We are unique in that we flex to what our clients need.

I am frequently asked how I started Downsizing by Design. In 2009, my mother moved into a retirement community in the Chicago area. As she met other residents, she heard that many wished they had moved in much sooner but were overwhelmed with moving. They didn’t know where to start, what to keep or take, how to donate or discard unwanted belongings, and the thought of packing and physically moving was daunting. So they delayed their move, and missed out on the many amenities their new life would bring. Others moved in with too many belongings, causing clutter.

With my background in nursing, training, consulting and project management, as well as my desire to help people, I saw senior move management as an opportunity to provide a much-needed service to seniors and their families.

Downsizing by Design opened its doors in May 2012 and has served over 300 clients and their families: downsizing/rightsizing, planning, organizing and coordinating moves.

I am blessed and humbled to work with a group of thoughtful, caring, talented and hard-working individuals. They work amazingly well as a team and go above and beyond to take care of clients as if they were family. We would love the opportunity to serve you.

It’s a wonderful feeling to see the smiles on the faces of the clients and their families as we assist in sorting, packing and moving. When we are finished and the new home looks as though they never moved at all, I feel as though I have made a new friend.

The Downsizing By Design Difference

We make it easy for you.

Our staff members ensure that your move runs smoothly. We are knowledgeable, flexible, and dedicated to providing you with the best service possible. Many of our clients trust us to handle the entire process so they can spend more time with their loved ones, whether they live locally or out of town.

We care.

We understand how emotional it is to not only move from your home but also to downsize. We’ve gone through this process with our own loved ones. We don’t just pack and unpack, we help you sort through memories, make decisions, and enter the next stage of your life with less stress.

We go above and beyond.

We listen to your needs and concerns and do what it takes to make sure your transition goes smoothly. We’ll even take photos of your house before packing so we can unpack your household goods, arranging them in the same way in your new home.

Our experience distinguishes us.

Downsizing by Design received the A+ Accreditation from the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) in November, 2017.
